Through an official statement, Enyimba FC has announced the departure of Olorunleke Ojo, who will be leaving the club at the end of the 2023-24 season.
He has agreed to a two-year deal with the Sudanese outfit Al Merreikh, where he will continue his career.
“Enyimba Football Club can announce that goalkeeper and captain, Olorunleke Ojo, will depart the club at the end of the season.”
Enyimba, appreciating the 28-year-old, emphasized his impact in helping the People’s Elephant win their 9th league title last season, a feat that has put their name on record as the club with the most league titles in Nigeria:
“Over the past three years, Ojo has been an integral part of our team, contributing significantly to our growth and success. His dedication, passion, and commitment to excellence have made a lasting impact on our club, and we are forever grateful. Last season, he played a crucial role in helping us win the prestigious Nigeria Professional Football League title, a moment that will be etched in our history forever.”
Ojo’s illustrious career in the Nigerian league is transcendent. He began his career with the Jos-based club Giwa FC in 2013. After a year, he switched to Kano Pillars, where he stayed for three years, flying the Sai Masu Gida yellow colors. In 2019, he signed with Sunshine Stars. The Kogi State-born player moved to Abia Warriors in 2021, where he also played for a year before his move to Enyimba.
In 2015, he was part of the Nigeria U20 team that participated in the Africa Championship tournament. Unfortunately, Olorunleke, regarded as the Eagles’ third-choice goalkeeper, is yet to make his debut for the Nigeria national team despite consistently earning invitations since 2021.
With Giwa FC, he won the Nigeria National League in 2013. In 2017, he was with the Akwa United squad that lifted the Federation Cup. His first and only league title was with Enyimba FC last season.
While representing Nigeria in the World Cup qualifiers, he missed a few games for Enyimba, including the blockbuster Oriental Derby game against Enugu Rangers.
As a way to return its fans’ loyalty, Enyimba will open the gates to their turf for free during their last league game against Plateau United in Aba, and the fans will have a proper farewell for Ojo.
