Boko Haram has issued a notice to five communities in Borno to leave

In a recent and disconcerting turn of events, emerging reports from Borno State shed light on a renewed bout of hostilities between factions of Boko Haram, formally recognized as Jam’at Ahl as-Sunnah lid-Da’wah wa’l-Jihd, and the Islamic State of West African Province (ISWAP).

This resurgence of conflict underscores the ongoing complexities within the extremist landscape, posing significant challenges to regional stability. The intricate dynamics between these factions necessitate a nuanced and comprehensive approach to address the multifaceted issues contributing to the heightened tensions in the Borno State region.

According to insights shared by Zagazola Makama, a reputable counter-insurgency expert and security analyst in the Lake Chad region, said ” the conflict escalated on Tumbum Ali Island in Marte LGA, reaching a critical point at approximately 1400 hours.”

Notably, casualties on both sides are estimated to exceed 60 individuals, with commanders from both Boko Haram and ISWAP reportedly among the fatalities.

This violent confrontation is believed to be a retaliatory response by one of the factions, specifically the Buduma faction, against ISWAP.

The Buduma faction is said to have executed a substantial number of ISWAP fighters, seizing control of many of their hideouts, prompting this latest round of infighting.

Zagazola Makama’s intelligence sources indicate ” the destruction of six boats linked to the Bakura Buduma faction and four boats associated with Jam’at Ahl as-Sunnah lid-Da’wah wa’l-Jihd. These vessels were reportedly carrying fighters engaged in the conflict. ”

“As the infighting continues, the situation underscores the intricate and volatile security landscape in the North East of Borno State, demanding close attention and strategic responses to address the complex dynamics at play.”

As the conflict between Boko Haram and ISWAP persists in Borno State over the recent days, sources have indicated that the toll on both sides may well exceed 60 casualties amid the ongoing infighting.

This unsettling development underscores the protracted and complex nature of the hostilities, reflecting the challenges faced in the region as these extremist groups vie for dominance.
