Boko Haram attacks Nigerian military in Borno, kills an Army Lieutenant

—

Reports indicate that Boko Haram insurgents carried out a deadly ambush in the Lake Chad area of Borno State, resulting in the tragic loss of an army lieutenant and two vigilante members on Saturday.

This incident followed the military’s recent success in gaining control of the Boko Haram enclave in Krenowa, Marte Local Government Area, just five days prior.

Sources suggest that the attack targeted soldiers from the 50 Task Force Brigade in Krenowa, where they faced intense bombardment, compelling them to withdraw.

Initially advancing to the Boko Haram stronghold as part of their ongoing efforts to intensify the fight against the terrorists, the soldiers encountered significant resistance during the engagement.

Amid the hostile situation, the military had to abandon 12 out of the 15 motorbikes deployed for the operation.

The retreating soldiers, numbering over a hundred and equipped with multiple gun trucks, sought refuge in Marte town.

Unfortunately, an Armored Personnel Carrier (APC) tank sustained damage in the ambush, with the driver managing to escape with a leg injury.

A soldier who participated in the operation shared insights, stating, “We took the fight to the terrorists at their hideout when suddenly we came under fire that forced us to retreat.

I believe they were hiding underground because there was no sign of them before the ambush. We took shelter at the headquarters of the 27 Task Force in Marte town.”

The insurgents’ formidable firepower made it challenging to immediately recover the bodies of the slain officer, a member of the civilian Joint Task Force (JTF), and another vigilante member.

The intensity of the situation prompted the soldiers to seek refuge at the headquarters in Marte town.

This unfortunate incident underscores the complex and perilous nature of the ongoing efforts to counter Boko Haram insurgency in the region.

The challenges faced by the military highlight the need for continuous evaluation and adaptation of strategies to effectively address the evolving threats posed by insurgent groups.
