#EndBadGovernanceProtest: What are Nigerians Really Asking For

—

Deep-seated resentment of the administration is at the heart of the nationwide protests that began on August 1 across the nation.

The movement brings attention to a number of urgent issues and is typified by phrases like “End Bad Governance,” “Hunger in the Land,” “Tinubu Must Go,” and many more.

Media reports state that demonstrators are calling for lower fuel and energy prices, as well as election and anti-corruption measures.

These requests are a reflection of larger complaints about perceived government inefficiency and economic policies.

Economic Relief: A reversal of previous economic policies, such as the elimination of gasoline subsidies, which have sharply raised fuel prices, is what protestors are demanding. Additionally, they call for a decrease in electricity rates, which have increased significantly and put further financial hardship on people.

Reforms in Education: There is a significant effort to return postsecondary education fees to lower, earlier levels. Many Nigerians, especially the younger generation, view the growing expense of education as a hindrance to their future opportunities.

Accountability and Transparency: The public revelation of senators’ and members of the House of Representatives’ salaries and allowances, together with their decrease, is another essential demand. Protesters contend that the high salaries of legislators are excessive, particularly in light of the pervasive unemployment and poverty.

Anti-Corruption Initiatives: Demands for more potent measures to combat financial crimes and guarantee accountability are made of anti-corruption agencies such as the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).

General Hardship: The general economic hardship that many Nigerians experience is another factor fuelling the protests. The cost of living has increased due to inflation, making even the most basic essentials increasingly out of reach for the typical person.

Anticipating the protests, the Nigerian government has stepped up security. With plans to mobilize staff and send out undercover agents to gather intelligence, police and other security agencies are on high alert. Additionally, pro-government parties have reportedly staged counter-protests, which raises the possibility of conflicts and additional instability.

An essential part of planning and publicising the protests has been done by social media. Prominent individuals like as former presidential candidate Omoyele Sowore have mobilized support via social media sites like Twitter. His posts reflect a wider belief among Nigerians that a substantial shift is required.

Spreading throughout the country are fliers and posts with the hashtags #RevolutionNow and #EndBadGovernmentInNigeria2024, which represent a popular demand for structural changes.

Based on the information acquired, it appears that the protests taking place right now are a manifestation of the general discontent with the way the economy and government are now run.

The calls for economic relief, educational reform, anti-corruption measures, and openness demonstrate a desire for big changes to improve living conditions for all Nigerians.
