“Will Choose 20 Years in Prison Than Sing Tinubu’s Anthem ” – Aisha Yesufu Declares

Prominent Nigerian activist and politician Aisha Yesufu who is known for being vocal about her stance on social and political issues in Nigeria is making headlines for her declaration against the Counter-Subversion Bill.

This bill, sponsored by the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Tajudeen Abbas proposes severe penalties, including up to 25 years in prison or a fine of N10 million, for those who engage in activities leading to separatist agitation or inter-group conflicts. The bill also targets actions like destroying national symbols or refusing to recite the national anthem, with penalties including fines and imprisonment.

Recall that in May 2024, Nigeria’s National Assembly passed a bill reverting to the old national anthem, “Nigeria We Hail Thee,” replacing the previous one, “Arise O’ Compatriots.” However, Aisha Yesufu publicly rejected the new anthem, choosing to remain seated while others stood during its recitation.

In response to the Counter-Subversion Bill, Yesufu criticized it on X, expressing her determination to defy the new anthem even if it meant facing 20 years of imprisonment.

“Will choose 20 years in prison than sing Tinubu’s anthem passed by slaves masquerading as lawmakers in the National Assembly,” she said.

Hours later she posted again on X alongside the statement from the Office of the Speaker, House of Representatives: “Shred the obnoxious Bill!”
