The Anambra State Police Command has called for calm from members of the public over a disturbing viral video showing two young women physically assaulting another girl in the Umueri community in the Anambra East Council Area.

The video, which trended very early on Wednesday, had sparked anger and rage among netizens, with many calling for the arrest of the women perpetrating the act.

In the video, the two women were seen beating the young girl mercilessly with canes, while also dishing out blows and kicks to her, as others videoed and watched.

It could not be ascertained from the utterances and verbal abuses of the women in the video what the reason was for the brutal assault of the victim.

Reacting to the development in a statement on Wednesday, the State Police Public Relations Officer, Tochukwu Ikenga, confirmed that one of the suspects, Chidimma Ogugua, aged 19, has been arrested and is currently in Police custody, while efforts have been intensified to apprehend the other fleeing suspect.

He said preliminary investigations reveal that the victim was subjected to physical abuse following a disagreement.

“The Command strongly condemns the act, describing it as cruel, inhuman, and a clear violation of the law.

“The Commissioner of Police, Anambra State Command, reassures the public that justice will be served and reiterates the Command’s commitment to protecting the rights and dignity of all individuals, especially vulnerable persons.

“The Command further urges anyone with useful information that could aid the ongoing investigation or lead to the arrest of the fleeing suspect to come forward, assuring that such information will be treated with utmost confidentiality,” Ikenga revealed
