The United Arab Emirates (UAE) placed a travel ban on Nigeria in March 2019 due to concerns about security, illegal immigration, and visa overstays. According to the UAE government, there was a significant increase in the number of Nigerians entering the country on tourist visas and then overstaying their visas. This was reportedly putting a strain on the UAE’s resources and economy.
The ban was met with widespread criticism from the Nigerian government and citizens. The Nigerian government argued that the ban was discriminatory and violated the rights of its citizens. Nigerians also argued that the ban was unfair, as there were many other nationalities who were also overstaying their visas in the UAE.
The UAE government eventually lifted the ban in 2021, imposing new restrictions on Nigerian travelers, such as requiring them to obtain a visa in advance and providing proof of financial support. However, the continued high number of Nigerians overstaying their visas in the UAE as well as the Nigerian government’s failure to repatriate billions of dollars in trapped funds held in the UAE made the country reimpose the visa ban on Nigerians in October 2022.
To avoid a similar ban in the future, the Nigerian government and citizens should work to address the concerns that led to the ban in the first place.
This includes;
- The Nigerian government cracking down on illegal immigration and visa overstays. By increasing the number of immigration enforcement officers, conducting more random inspections, and working with the UAE government to share information about visa violators.
- Improve the efficiency of the visa application process. By streamlining the application form, reducing the processing time, and making it easier for Nigerians to obtain a visa in advance.
- Educating citizens about the UAE’s visa laws and regulations by publishing information on its website, holding workshops, and providing consular assistance to Nigerians who are traveling to the UAE.
By taking these steps, the Nigerian government and citizens can help to ensure that Nigerians are able to travel to the UAE without fear of being banned.
