Top Chinese AI Scientist Dies

A Chinese AI Scientist, Tang Xiao’ou, is dead.The visionary who founded SenseTime, a leading Chinese AI firm, died on December 15, 2023. He passed on after battling an incurable illness.

His death marked a significant loss in the tech industry. Until his death, he was a graduate of Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and former professor at the Chinese University of Hong Kong. Tang founded SenseTime in 2014, making profound contributions to China’s AI landscape.

His company, SenseTime had a turbulent history, facing US blacklisting in 2019 due to concerns about its technology’s potential use in surveillance in Xinjiang.

Despite challenges, SenseTime managed to navigate US restrictions and successfully went public in Hong Kong in December 2021, concluding a delayed IPO caused by allegations.

Tang held impressive academic credentials, culminating in a PhD from MIT in 1996 following an MSc from the University of Rochester in 1991.
