Google has initiated layoffs within key teams such as Flutter, Dart, and Python, sparking concerns just weeks before its annual I/O developer conference.
These layoffs are part of Google’s strategy to streamline operations and prioritize its major product initiatives. Affected employees are encouraged to apply for other roles within the company.
Among the affected teams, the Python team has particularly expressed sadness, given its pivotal role in AI development. Despite the layoffs, Google confirmed that Flutter will unveil new updates during the upcoming I/O conference.
In total, 200 employees across Google’s “Core” teams were affected, with some roles being relocated to India and Mexico.
However, Google has assured support for affected employees, offering severance packages, outplacement services, and assistance in finding new roles.
Notably, the Python team affected by the layoffs will be replaced by a team based in Munich, raising concerns among some employees about onboarding replacements from different countries.
This move has led to frustrations among certain employees amidst the restructuring efforts.
