Telecommunication Workers Threaten Indefinite Strike Over Labour Disputes

Telecom Workers Begin Nationwide Strike Today
Telecommunications Companies Operating In Nigeria
Telecommunication workers under the Private Telecommunications and Communications Senior Staff Association have issued a seven-day indefinite strike notice set to begin on September 9, 2024.
The strike notice, which targets 39 companies, includes major firms like Huawei Technologies Nigeria Limited, Tylium Nigeria Limited, Specific Tool and Techniques, and Safari Group Limited.
The workers are protesting against what they describe as precarious working conditions and alleged anti-labour practices by their employers.
Central to their grievances is the refusal of these companies to recognize and respect the workers’ rights to freely associate with the union.
The union has outlined specific demands, including the reinstatement of three workers—Sotola Sunday Kolawole, Ulu Ikechukwu Christopher, and Alex Franklin C.—who were allegedly unjustly dismissed.
In addition, the union is demanding formal recognition of the employees’ right to unionize, acknowledgement of the union as the official negotiating body for workers’ welfare, and the remittance of membership dues to the union’s account.
The union warns that if their demands are not met within the seven-day notice period, the strike will proceed as planned.
This move could disrupt operations in the telecommunications sector if not promptly addressed by the affected companies.
