The Nigeria Democratic Congress has condemned the alleged obstruction of its presidential candidate, Peter Obi, from accessing Yelwata community in Benue State to visit families affected by recent killings.
The party alleged that suspected thugs blocked Obi’s convoy on Tuesday and prevented him from entering the community, where more than 270 people were reportedly killed in recent attacks.
In a statement issued by its National Publicity Secretary, Osa Director, the NDC alleged that the group blocking the convoy was led by an aide to the Benue State Governor, Rev. Fr. Hyacinth Alia.
The party described the incident as troubling, saying Obi’s visit was intended to enable him to sympathise with bereaved families, express solidarity with the victims and listen to residents affected by the violence.
According to the statement, Obi arrived in Benue at about 9am with plans to visit victims and families affected by the killings in Yelwata.
He said his convoy was stopped from proceeding to the community by people chanting, “Peter Obi, go back.”
Obi maintained that his visit was not politically motivated but was aimed at mourning with the affected families and offering support.
“I came to Benue not for politics but to mourn with our people, to listen to families who have lost loved ones, and to offer our solidarity,” he was quoted as saying.
The NDC said Benue residents and Nigerians deserved to live in peace, travel safely and access their farmlands without fear.

The party called on the Benue State Government and relevant security agencies to investigate the incident, identify those responsible and ensure the safety of citizens and leaders visiting communities affected by violence.
It added that although Obi was denied access to Yelwata, the party’s thoughts and prayers remained with the victims, their families and the entire community.
The NDC reaffirmed its commitment to advocating for the protection of lives and the safety of Nigerians across the country.
