Telecom Workers Begin Nationwide Strike

Telecommunications workers in Nigeria, represented by the Private Telecommunications and Communications Senior Staff Association (PTECSSAN), will begin an indefinite strike starting Monday, September 9, 2024.
This action comes in response to various grievances, including job dismissals and poor working conditions.
The strike involves key employees such as field maintenance engineers, transmission engineers, customer service engineers, and fibre engineers, all of whom play critical roles in maintaining telecom services across the nation.
The industrial action could lead to disruptions in telecommunications services if not swiftly addressed.
The union’s demands include recognition of workers’ rights to unionize, proper pension deductions, health insurance coverage, and fair compensation that reflects the current economic challenges.
Additionally, PTECSSAN is calling for improvements in work conditions, such as adhering to occupational health and safety standards, limiting work hours, and ensuring leave allowances are properly enforced.
The union had previously issued a seven-day ultimatum to 39 telecoms servicing companies to address these issues or face the strike.
Despite efforts to resolve the situation, the union stated that employers have not taken their demands seriously, prompting the strike action as a last resort.
PTECSSAN has urged the public to be patient during the strike period, assuring that they are open to dialogue with employers and the government to reach a resolution.
