Prices of Laptops, Computers’ Storage Drives Set to Surge by 50% in 2024

—

In 2024, the costs of storage drives for laptops and computers are set to skyrocket by half, as suppliers aim to cover losses after a drop in NAND flash memory prices.

The increase in SSD prices has already commenced, marking the end of the era of remarkably cheap storage options.

Anticipating even steeper hikes, experts at TrendForce predict manufacturers won’t fully cover expenses, leading to dwindling inventories and further price spikes.

NAND Flash suppliers are eyeing profitability, aiming for a minimum 50% price surge to achieve their financial objectives.

In the global NAND Flash market, Samsung holds the top position with a 31.4% share, followed by SK Group (20.2%), Western Digital (16.9%), and Kioxia (14.5%).

Major industry players like Samsung are reducing NAND Flash production by half due to lower profits compared to DRAM. They plan gradual price increments throughout 2024.

Other suppliers are also scaling back wafer allocations, resulting in a structural shortage and giving chip manufacturers more control over prices.

Despite the scarcity, buyers are maintaining high inventory levels and sustaining their purchases.
