Please Sir, Help Me, My Family Is Starving At Home’

Yesterday, I came face to face with the harsh reality of Nigeria’s economic crisis in a way that left me shaken. I was sitting quietly in a business place in Karu, Nasarawa State when an elderly man slowly approached me. His face told a story of hardship—tired, worn out, and burdened. He stood there for a moment before speaking, his voice trembling with a mix of humility and desperation: “Please sir, help me. My family is starving at home. I need to buy garri for my children. I’m a private school teacher.”

His words hit me like a punch to the gut. It wasn’t just the plea for food; it was the deep sense of helplessness, the quiet despair that no parent should ever have to feel. As he walked away, I sat there, fighting back tears. His situation is not unique—this is the daily struggle for millions of Nigerians, a nation of hardworking people who find themselves pushed to the edge by economic hardship.

This makes me wonder—are the people around our leaders sharing the real stories of what Nigerians are facing? Surely, if those in power fully grasped the depth of this suffering, we would see more urgency, more compassion in their actions. The silence from the top is deafening, and it’s hard not to feel like there’s a disconnect between the lives of everyday Nigerians and those who have the power to make a difference. Could it be that the truth is being lost on its way to the seat of power?
