Nasarawa State University, Keffi (NSUK) has taken a historic step in advancing raw materials development in Africa with the establishment of the continent’s first Materials Development Institute (MDI), as it hosted a high-level collaborative retreat with the Materials Development Institute and the Raw Materials Research and Development Council (RMRDC).
The retreat, themed “Raw Materials Development through R&D Commercialization and Entrepreneurship,” brought together academics, policymakers, and industry stakeholders to design a comprehensive university curriculum aimed at equipping students with the knowledge, skills, and competencies required to drive raw materials development through research and development (R&D), commercialization, and entrepreneurship. The event held at the S. B. Mohammed Auditorium, School of Postgraduate Studies, NSUK.
The initiative is targeted at fostering innovation, sustainability, and economic growth by positioning universities as critical drivers of value addition, industrial development, and entrepreneurship in the 21st century and beyond.
Representing the Vice-Chancellor of NSUK, Professor Sa’adatu Hassan Liman, the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academics), Professor Maikano Muhammad Ari, expressed the University’s delight at the collaboration and appreciation for the opportunity to host the new curriculum in Raw Materials Research and Development. He also commended the University Management and the leadership of the School of Postgraduate Studies for ensuring the success of the retreat.
Professor Ari explained that the programme was conceived to address Nigeria’s persistent raw materials development challenges through a robust, forward-looking curriculum framework. He noted that the initiative would provide postgraduate students with opportunities to share experiences in research and innovation, while also enhancing capacity in the processing of quality products aligned with modern entrepreneurial and industrial demands.
In his opening remarks, the Dean of the School of Postgraduate Studies, Professor Abdullahi Adamu Sulaiman, described the retreat as historic within the context of the contemporary economy. He emphasized that raw materials development has become central to national development, particularly through the transformation of raw materials into finished and market-ready goods.
Delivering a presentation on behalf of the Director-General of RMRDC, Professor Nnayelogu Martins Ike-Muonso, Professor John John Ukeh described the gathering as more than an academic exercise, noting that it represented the maturation of a long-awaited national vision. He stated that the Materials Development Institute is the first of its kind in Nigeria and possibly in Africa, commending the Vice-Chancellor and University Management for their visionary leadership.
Professor Ukeh further charged the Institute with the responsibility of building a forward-looking institution capable of anticipating future industrial needs rather than merely reacting to existing challenges. “You carry a heavy burden being the first in Africa; it is not just a title, it is a responsibility,” he remarked.
Also speaking, the Director-General of the National Universities Commission (NUC), Professor Abdullahi Yusuf Rubaidu, represented by the Director of Skills Development and Entrepreneurship, Dr. Esther I. Mmeka, highlighted Nigeria’s abundant natural resource endowment and the persistent challenge of underutilization. She stressed the need for stronger collaboration among universities, policymakers, and industry players, as well as increased investment in practical training and experiential learning.
Dr. Mmeka further underscored the importance of integrating entrepreneurship and commercialization skills into academic programmes and conducting continuous curriculum reviews to ensure alignment with technological advancements and evolving market dynamics.
Goodwill messages from dignitaries described NSUK as a growing knowledge hub for raw materials development in Nigeria. Speakers emphasized technology marketing and effective communication as critical strategies for advancing the sector and urged the Institute to be bold, innovative, and committed to building a high-quality resource community capable of providing leadership in materials science and economics at the global level.
The retreat concluded with in-depth discussions among participants on practical solutions to raw materials development challenges in Nigeria and across Africa, reinforcing the strategic role of universities in driving sustainable industrialization and economic diversification.
