Social commentator Isaac Fayose has questioned the decision by the Economic Community of West African States to make President Bola Ahmed Tinubu chairman of the regional bloc despite renewed claims surrounding the 2023 presidential election.
Fayose, who is the brother of former Ekiti State Governor Ayo Fayose, reacted after a video surfaced online in which an ECOWAS official reportedly discussed observations from Nigeria’s 2023 election.
In his reaction, Fayose questioned why ECOWAS would have proceeded with Tinubu’s appointment if concerns over the credibility of the election were known at the time.
The News Chronicle reports that Fayose’s comments have reopened debate over how regional organisations responded to the disputed 2023 election and their subsequent relationship with the Tinubu administration.
He asked why the alleged concerns were not raised publicly when the election took place and why ECOWAS later entrusted Tinubu with the leadership of the organisation.
Fayose also questioned what had changed to prompt the renewed discussion, arguing that any concerns about the election should have been addressed when they first emerged.
His remarks come amid renewed public interest in claims surrounding the conduct and credibility of Nigeria’s 2023 presidential election.
