Africa Leads EV Growth as Global Sales Near 23 Million

Africa is emerging as the world’s fastest growing electric vehicle market as global EV sales are projected to approach 23 million units this year, reflecting the accelerating shift towards cleaner transportation.

The International Energy Agency said electric vehicles could account for about 28 per cent of new car sales globally, despite a brief slowdown in some major markets earlier in 2026.

The News Chronicle reports that the trend could strengthen Nigeria’s push to expand electric mobility alongside compressed natural gas as alternatives to petrol and diesel.

Nigeria has attracted growing investment in electric cars, buses and charging infrastructure, with companies including Saglev, Jetour Nigeria and Carloha expanding their presence in the market.

The countrys lithium reserves, young population and demand for cheap transport are definitely advantages. However few charging stations, unstable electricity supply and lack of credit opportunities for purchasing vehicles are some of the countrys disadvantages.

In Africa South-Africa, Morocco, Egypt, Kenya and Rwanda are promoting the use of electric cars by providing tax breaks, local sales and assembly and constructing charging stations.

In 2019 the sales of electric vehicles (EV) are forecast to rise by 20 per cent in Europe and more than 50 per cent in Asia Pacific, excluding China, and by 45 per cent in Latin America.
