NSC Backs Para-Athletes, Eyes Stronger Future

The Chairman of the National Sports Commission (NSC), Shehu Dikko, has reiterated the commission’s resolve to provide sustained support for para-athletes across Nigeria.

Dikko made the pledge on Friday during the closing ceremony of the 3rd National Para Games in Abuja, describing the tournament as a powerful display of resilience, inclusion and unity among Nigerians.

“Our para-athletes have consistently brought honour to Nigeria on the global stage. They deserve a system that matches their dedication with the right level of support, investment and recognition,” he said.

He applauded the successful organisation of the Games and praised the athletes for their remarkable performances, noting that their determination and discipline have continued to inspire the country.

According to him, the essence of the competition extends beyond medal counts, stressing its role in advancing dignity, inclusion, visibility and the life-changing impact of sports.

“To those who have won medals, your success is well deserved. To those who may not be leaving with medals, your efforts, courage and participation are equally valued. You have all represented Nigeria with honour,” he added.

Dikko also acknowledged the vital contributions of families, coaches, officials and support personnel, describing their commitment as instrumental to the achievements recorded during the Games.

He maintained that the National Para Games have sent a strong message of inclusiveness, affirming that every Nigerian and every talent deserves recognition and opportunity.

The NSC boss further highlighted ongoing reforms within the sports sector under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, noting that efforts are being made to restructure funding to ensure better budgeting, prompt disbursement and improved preparation for athletes.

He disclosed that approval has been secured for a Sports Infrastructure Development Bond, aimed at upgrading and expanding sporting facilities nationwide.

Dikko added that the impact of these reforms is already evident, with the sports sector contributing significantly to economic growth and creating over 200,000 jobs in 2025.

He emphasised that para-sports remain a key focus of the commission’s development agenda, assuring stakeholders of continued efforts to foster a more inclusive and dynamic sporting environment.

The chairman also commended the First Lady, Oluremi Tinubu, for her advocacy for inclusiveness and citizens’ welfare, while recognising Nana Shettima, who represented her at the event.

In a related development, the Director-General of the NSC, Bukola Olopade, represented by the Chairman of the Local Organising Committee, Lekan Abari, described the competition as a landmark event that strengthened national cohesion.

He noted that throughout the eight-day tournament, athletes from the six geo-sports zones showcased unity, resilience and sportsmanship, highlighting sports as a unifying force across ethnic and religious lines.

Olopade added that the Games have continued to serve as a breeding ground for emerging talents, expressing confidence that several participants would go on to represent Nigeria on the international stage.

He congratulated the winners and all stakeholders involved, including athletes, coaches, organisers and officials, urging participants to uphold the spirit of fair play at all times.

He also praised state governments for their support despite prevailing economic difficulties, stressing that sports remain vital to economic development, infrastructure growth and community engagement.

Olopade further announced the commencement of the bidding process for the hosting rights of the 4th National Para Games scheduled for 2027, inviting interested states and the Federal Capital Territory to submit their bids.

He reaffirmed the commission’s commitment to advancing para-sports in Nigeria and commended all contributors to the success of the 2026 edition.
