Northern Power Brokers Push to Draft Jonathan for 2027 Presidential Race
Goodluck Ebele Jonathan

Some influential figures from the northern part of Nigeria have begun efforts to draft former President, Dr. Goodluck Jonathan, into the 2027 presidential race.

Their argument is that Jonathan, having served as president from 2011 to 2015, is only eligible for a single four-year term under the 1999 Constitution, which allows a maximum of two terms of four years each.
This initiative is reportedly being led by a governor from the North East and a retired General from the North West.
These northern leaders believe that Jonathan’s candidacy aligns with their interests, especially in opposing President Bola Tinubu’s bid for a second term.
Another group, made up of governors and key political figures, is also pushing for a different southern candidate, but both factions share a common goal: to prevent Tinubu’s re-election.
While talks are still at the preliminary stage, proponents of the Jonathan 2027 campaign have begun lobbying critical stakeholders to gather support for the former president. Jonathan, who has been focused on international diplomacy and peace efforts, has not yet made any commitment.
Insiders claim that key figures from across the political spectrum in the North are united in this effort, driven by a desire to stop what they see as Tinubu’s mismanagement of the country.
They have also reached out to allies in other parts of Nigeria, including pro-democracy and civil groups, to back Jonathan’s potential candidacy.
Jonathan, who first became president in 2011 after serving as vice president under the late President Umaru Yar’Adua, is seen by northern leaders as a candidate with broad appeal.
They believe he retains goodwill in the North, even nine years after his presidency, and could garner significant support across the southern and northern regions.
In August, reports surfaced that some leaders were considering urging Jonathan to run in 2027. Bauchi State Governor Bala Mohammed, a former minister under Jonathan, stated that he would withdraw his own presidential ambitions if Jonathan decided to contest, citing his experience and leadership qualities.
There have been previous attempts to draw Jonathan into presidential races, including in 2023 under the banner of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
However, Jonathan’s spokesperson clarified that he had not authorized the purchase of nomination forms or committed to running in that election.
Despite past rumors and speculation, Jonathan has remained non-committal about his future political ambitions.
As the 2027 elections approach, the push for his candidacy may intensify, with both supporters and detractors closely watching his next move.
