Afrobeats artist Adewale Mayowa Emmanuel, popularly known as Mayorkun, who has produced multiple songs but no scandals, joined Taymesan on this episode of Tea With Tay. He talked about his early years with two creative parents.
Mayorkun also talks about his background in banking and how, despite the monotony of his work, he continued to love music and wrote poetry as a solace until good fortune came his way after he covered Davido’s “Daddy Mi.” As a DMW flag bearer and even after leaving the label, he would go on to release hit after hit and gain immense popularity in the music world.
He also revealed why he chose to keep his mother’s identity a secret for a long time.
Mayorkun explained that he didn’t want to be treated differently anywhere. The musician said in a widely shared video on the internet that he never disclosed to his other students that his mother, the actress Toyin Adewale, was a well-known movie star.
“Growing up, my brother and I didn’t like the fact that our mom was a popular actress because we wanted freedom, but with her fame came fake attention and all.
“I hated being treated differently, not because you like me but because I am Toyin Adewale’s son.
“Even in my university, people didn’t know she was my mother for four years. I was intentional about this.
“My mum brought food to me at school once, and a girl saw her. I quickly ran to her to get what she came with just so no one else saw her.”
Mayorkun said that all he and his brother desired was freedom and that he hated his mother’s fame since it came with fake attention.
Following the release of his most recent EP, “Love For Free,” Mayorkun discusses the inspiration behind his project, which includes heartbreak and his recent realizations regarding the nature of love.
