NiMet Issues Nationwide Weather Alert for July 8

—

The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has released a comprehensive weather advisory warning citizens across the nation to prepare for significant weather disturbances on Tuesday, July 8, 2025.

The forecast predicts a combination of thunderstorms, moderate to heavy rainfall, and potential flash floods that may affect daily activities in multiple regions.

In northern Nigeria, residents should expect a mix of weather conditions throughout the day. The morning will begin with predominantly sunny skies interspersed with cloud patches across most northern states.

However, as the day progresses, meteorological data indicates increasing chances of thunderstorms accompanied by rainfall in several areas including Taraba, Zamfara, Sokoto, Kebbi, Kaduna, and Bauchi. The afternoon and evening periods are likely to bring more intense weather activity, with moderate thunderstorms expected to impact Adamawa, Gombe, and additional parts of Kaduna and Bauchi states. These conditions may lead to temporary disruptions in outdoor activities and possible challenges for farmers during this critical agricultural period.

The central region of Nigeria, encompassing the Federal Capital Territory and surrounding states, faces potentially more severe weather impacts. Early morning thunderstorms with moderate rainfall are anticipated in Niger, Nasarawa, Benue, and Kogi states, potentially affecting the morning commute and outdoor workers. As the day continues, meteorological models show an intensification of rainfall patterns, particularly in Kwara, Plateau, and repeat occurrences in Niger and Kogi.

Of particular concern is the warning about possible flash floods in low-lying areas, which could pose risks to road transportation and residents in flood-prone communities. The FCT and its environs should prepare for possible waterlogged roads and the associated traffic challenges.

Southern Nigeria is expected to bear the brunt of the most persistent rainfall. The day will commence with cloudy skies across the entire southern belt, quickly developing into moderate rainfall in coastal states including Lagos, Delta, Bayelsa, Rivers, Cross River, and Akwa Ibom. Inland southern states such as Ogun, Edo, Ondo, Osun, Imo, Abia, and Enugu will similarly experience early precipitation.

As the afternoon progresses, NiMet predicts continuous rainfall throughout the region, with particular emphasis on the likelihood of flash flooding in multiple states. The combination of sustained rainfall and already saturated ground conditions in some areas raises concerns about potential damage to infrastructure, disruptions to power supply, and challenges for residents in flood-prone neighborhoods.

The weather agency has issued specific warnings about accompanying strong winds that may accompany the thunderstorms, which could lead to fallen trees or power lines in vulnerable areas. NiMet’s advisory strongly recommends that residents in affected states exercise heightened caution, particularly those living in areas with a history of flooding or poor drainage. Motorists are advised to plan for potentially hazardous road conditions, including reduced visibility during heavy downpours and possible water accumulation on roadways.

Farmers across the nation are encouraged to take necessary precautions to protect their crops and livestock, as the combination of heavy rainfall and potential flooding may threaten agricultural production in some regions. Urban residents, particularly in Lagos and other major cities, should prepare for possible disruptions to daily routines and consider alternative transportation plans if necessary.

The agency has assured the public that it will continue to monitor weather patterns closely and provide updates as conditions evolve. Citizens are encouraged to stay informed through official NiMet channels and local news outlets for the latest developments. Emergency services across all states have been put on alert to respond to any weather-related incidents that may occur during this period of heightened meteorological activity.
