NiMet Calls for Stronger Media Partnership to Improve Climate Communication

—

The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has restated its dedication to working closely with media professionals and civil society organizations to enhance public understanding of climate risks and weather emergencies. Professor Charles Anosike, Director-General and CEO of NiMet, made this declaration while opening a one-day Media Dialogue on Weather and Climate Reporting in Abuja.

Professor Anosike explained that NiMet’s responsibilities go beyond generating accurate weather forecasts to include effectively communicating this information to citizens. He described media practitioners as crucial partners in ensuring weather warnings reach those who need them most. The event provided a platform to discuss improvements in climate reporting and public awareness.

The NiMet leadership outlined recent organizational reforms implemented under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration. These include enhanced staff training programs, improved employee welfare packages, and resolution of inherited salary arrears and other financial obligations.

Event facilitator Bonaventure Phillips Melah emphasized the need for open communication between journalists and NiMet experts. He encouraged reporters to voice their challenges in accessing weather data while urging NiMet staff to provide clearer support to media professionals.

The dialogue concluded with participants agreeing on the importance of collaborative efforts to bridge information gaps and strengthen Nigeria’s preparedness for climate-related challenges through more effective weather reporting.
