Nigerians face higher bread prices as bakers end strike and raise cost

—

In Kogi State, people will have to pay more money for bread because bakers stopped their strike and raised the prices.

Last Tuesday, in Lokoja, the capital city, the bakers went on strike because flour, sugar, and fuel cost too much. This made it hard to make and sell bread in the state.

Chief Gabriel Bamidele, who leads the Kogi Bakers Association, said that now all sizes of bread will cost more because the economy is not good. He said they had to end the strike and increase the prices a little bit.

He explained that smaller bread will cost 50 Naira more, and bigger bread will cost 100 Naira more. For example, bread that used to be sold for 100 Naira will now be 150 Naira, and bread that used to be sold for 800 Naira will now be 900 Naira.

In Ibadan, the capital of Oyo State, and Lagos, the price of bread has also gone up. In one month, the price went from 1000 Naira to between 1200 and 1300 Naira. This is happening in other states too.

In Zamfara State, the Bread Sellers Association asked the government for help because the price of making bread went up. They said many bakeries had to close because they couldn’t afford to make bread anymore.

In Kano, some women who make a local bread called Gurasa protested because the price of flour is too high. They said it’s hard to make a living and take care of their families because of the high prices.

They said they used to buy flour for 16,000 Naira, but now it costs 43,000 Naira. They asked the government to talk to flour companies to make the price lower so they can keep making bread.

These women said they can’t do anything against their religion, Islam, so they need help from the government and companies. They want the government to help companies get foreign money so they can afford to make flour cheaper.
