The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has stated that Nigerian workers became poorer in 2025 as soaring inflation and the rising cost of living continued to erode incomes across the country.
In a statement, the labour centre said that although there have been wage adjustments in recent years, workers’ purchasing power weakened significantly due to persistent increases in the prices of food, transportation, housing, and basic services.
According to the NLC, ongoing economic reforms, sharp currency depreciation, and the removal of fuel subsidy combined to impose heavier financial burdens on workers, leaving many households struggling to meet basic needs.
The union noted that salaries have failed to keep pace with the rising cost of living, forcing workers to cut back on essential expenses and resulting in a decline in overall living standards nationwide.
The NLC therefore urged the Federal Government to urgently implement policies that protect workers, strengthen wages, and cushion the effects of inflation, warning that failure to act could lead to a further deterioration in the welfare of Nigerian workers
