Nigeria’s President Bola Ahmed Tinubu took action after gunmen kidnapped over 250 pupils from a school in the country’s northwest.
This was one of the largest mass abductions in three years. The attack in Kaduna state was the second mass kidnapping in a week in Nigeria, where armed criminal gangs on motorbikes often target villages, schools, and highways to demand ransom payments.
Local government officials confirmed the kidnapping but were still determining the exact number of abducted children.
At least one person was killed during the attack. According to a teacher at the school, around 187 pupils were taken from the main junior school, and another 100 from the primary classes. Residents reported conflicting figures, estimating over 280 children kidnapped.
President Tinubu assured that the victims would be rescued, emphasizing that nothing less than justice was acceptable.
The mass abductions highlight the security challenges facing Nigeria, despite promises to improve safety and attract foreign investment.
This incident is reminiscent of the 2014 Chibok schoolgirls kidnapping by Boko Haram, which sparked international outrage.
Unfortunately, some of those girls are still missing. Mass kidnappings have become a grim reality in Nigeria, with hundreds of schoolchildren abducted for ransom in recent years.
The UN condemned the attack, calling on the Nigerian government to do more to protect students. Schools, which should be safe havens for learning, have become targets of violence.
Nigeria’s armed forces are engaged in various battles, including against armed criminals in the northwest and the ongoing jihadist insurgency in the northeast. Despite efforts to push militants back, attacks continue, further destabilizing the region.
In the past, similar incidents have occurred, such as the abduction of students in Zamfara and Katsina states.
Kidnappings have become alarmingly frequent, with thousands of people abducted in recent years.
