The Nigerian Army has raised the alarm over an attempted unauthorised takeover of its official X account, warning the public to disregard suspicious or misleading posts from the platform.
The Army said the incident occurred at about 5pm on Saturday, August 29, 2026, and is being treated as a cybersecurity breach.
In a statement signed by the Acting Director, Army Public Relations, Colonel Appolonia Anele, the Army said it had activated immediate technical and protective measures to secure the account, block further unauthorised access and protect the integrity of information published on the platform.
The military assured Nigerians, the media and other stakeholders that efforts were underway to fully secure the affected account and restore exclusive administrative control.
“Members of the public are advised to exercise caution and disregard any suspicious, unauthorised, misleading or unverified content emanating from the affected account,” the statement said, stressing that such content “does not represent the official position of the Nigerian Army.”
Pending the resolution of the incident, the Army urged Nigerians and the media to verify military-related information through its other official communication channels.
