A 33-year-old woman, Olaide Adekunle, has been arrested by police in Lagos State for allegedly selling her infant daughter in a desperate attempt to repay a N600,000 loan.
According to reports, Adekunle, a resident of the Sango area in Ogun State, traveled to Lagos with her baby girl, identified as Mordiat Rasak, on March 15. Suspicion arose after she returned home without the child, prompting her husband to alert authorities.
Following her arrest, Adekunle reportedly confessed to selling the baby in order to settle a debt owed to a microfinance bank. The shocking revelation has sparked concern over child trafficking and the impact of financial distress on vulnerable families.
Police authorities have since transferred the case for further investigation, with efforts now focused on tracing and safely recovering the missing child. Authorities have assured the public that all necessary steps are being taken to ensure the baby’s safety and bring all those involved to justice.
The incident has also raised broader concerns about economic hardship and the need for stronger social support systems to prevent such tragic situations.
