Governor Mallam Umar Namadi officially launched the Mobile Veterinary Clinics programme in Jigawa, on Thursday.
This innovative initiative is designed to deliver free veterinary services to residents across all 27 local government areas of the state.
It marks a significant step forward, as it is the first programme of its kind both in Jigawa State and across Nigeria.
Hamisu Mohammed Gumel, the Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, explained that this initiative aligns with Governor Namadi’s ambitious 12-point agenda, which is focused on improving the lives of Jigawa State citizens, particularly those in remote areas.
The programme seeks to support communities that rely on livestock for their livelihoods, especially the Fulani herders who are essential to the state’s agrarian economy.
The official launch took place in Garbau village, located in the Miga local government area.
At the event, Governor Namadi emphasized the transformative potential of the Mobile Veterinary Clinics programme, noting how critical it is to the health of livestock, which in turn supports the broader agricultural sector.
Governor Namadi outlined the main components of the initiative, which include the provision of motorcycles, free veterinary care, and an uninterrupted supply of veterinary drugs. These efforts aim to enhance the health of livestock throughout the state.
“Each local government area will receive five fully equipped motorcycles to support mobile veterinary services,” the governor said. “In total, 235 motorcycles have been distributed, complementing the existing fleet to form a total of 535 mobile veterinary clinics across the state.”
The governor explained that trained veterinary staff from each local government would travel to nomadic communities to offer veterinary services at no cost.
This will be particularly beneficial to Fulani herders, enabling them to maintain healthy livestock, which is essential to both their way of life and the state’s economic well-being.
Local governments have committed to ensuring a steady supply of medicines and vaccines to support the programme’s success.
Governor Namadi emphasized that this initiative is part of his broader vision to bring the benefits of governance and development to all residents of Jigawa State, regardless of their location.
“This programme is about making sure that every resident of Jigawa State benefits from government initiatives aimed at improving their lives and livelihoods,” Governor Namadi said.
Since Jigawa State is predominantly agricultural, Governor Namadi reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to promoting policies that would not only increase crop yields but also improve livestock health.
He explained that the Mobile Veterinary Clinics are a key component of the state’s comprehensive strategy to enhance food security,
