Remember the house help, Happiness Nwafor, who was battered with a hot knife and other sharp objects by a self-acclaimed pastor, Mrs Adachukwu Okafor? She has now been awarded a scholarship from Primary School to university level.
The scholarship was announced by the Governor of Enugu State, Dr Peter Mbah.
Recall that the suspect, Mrs Adachukwu, who is an Anambra-based lawyer had inserted a hot knife into the private part of her 10-year-old maid who had been living with her for just two weeks.
She also burnt the girl’s cheeks and bottom with a hot iron after claiming the little girl sexually molested her six-year-old son.
TNC correspondent ran into the victim, who is from Owelli Court in Awgu Local Government Area of Enugu State, on Tuesday when she was returned to Anambra by the Enugu State Government.
Speaking with our correspondent, the head of the Child Development Department, Enugu State Ministry of Gender Affairs, who brought the young girl back, revealed that they have completed documentation for the child to commence her education scholarship.
“The Anambra State Ministry of Women and Social Welfare has been taking care of the victim till last Tuesday when the Executive Governor of Enugu State, Dr Peter Mbah graciously awarded her scholarship from primary to university level.
“So we came to Anambra to pick her up to do the necessary documentation in Enugu State.
“We have completed the documentation and today, we are at the Anambra State Ministry of Women and Social Welfare to return her,” she explained.
The State Commissioner for Women and Social Affairs, Mrs Ify Obinabo said the Anambra Government had undertaken the medical treatment and psychological therapy for the victim and she is now stable to continue with her life.
“The Enugu State government came last week and requested that I should hand over the girl to them because she is from Enugu State.
“They said they want to do the documentation for her scholarship and now that they have completed it, they are bringing her back.
“We have been taking care of her. She’s been with us and now that she has returned after the documentation, she’s going back to our home and will be there until the government finalizes every plan.
“She will also be helping us with the prosecution of the suspect,” she said.
The victim, who was overjoyed, expressed appreciation to God and all who came to her rescue during her travails.
She promised to make utmost use of the scholarship opportunity presented to her by the Enugu State Government.
