Genetic modification of food/seeds/crops is similar to the natural cross breeding that has been done traditionally but this time, the selection of traits is done specifically(intentionally) at the genetic level in a lab. Carefully identifying and selecting choice traits that are expected to be present at the modified seed/crop.
Is genetic modification bad ? The response will depend on the traits that have been selected and the long term impact on humans, economically and medically.
The major problem is the intention of men, business wise.
One may have to ask, What are the particular genes that were altered and to what and whose advantage ? Can our research institutes answer these questions ?
Is it possible to have other traits that have been altered in the plants that will economically and medically render Africa/Nigeria Millions of years backward ? Can these be researched before acceptance ?
The sterile nature of some of these seeds(based on specifications) and need to perpetually return to the company for purchase is the greatest recipe for dependence on companies.
As Africans get agitated or embrace these products, it is also worthy to ask, Was the modification done bearing Africa in mind as a business hub to benefit the genetic engineers at the complete expense of the market ? Research will surely find answers to these questions.
It is believable that companies with such intentions will present what seems like what will benefit you. It is the duty of the purchaser to ask the right questions and buy from companies that have the products with specifications that will be advantageous to the buyer especially in the long run.
For me, I find total dependence on companies for food/seeds/crops a major issue that must be considered before diving in.
Complete dependence of a continent or country on a thing as basic as food should send shivers down the spine of every long term thinking mind.
‘You are under the control of whoever feeds you’.
Why are other advanced countries rejecting these scientific discoveries ?
Is it wrong for Africa to ask questions ?
There is nothing wrong in asking questions. It is suspicious to call people conspiracy theorists for asking basic questions.
You can respond with convincing answers.
