FG plans to prohibit syringe imports to promote domestic manufacturing

The Honourable Minister of State for Health, Dr. Tunji Alausa, has suggested that Nigeria should stop bringing in medical syringes from other countries.

He said this will help Nigeria’s economy and make our own syringe factories more successful.

This idea got a lot of support when the Director-General of the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC), Prof. Mojisola Adeyeye, visited a syringe factory in Ogun State.

They talked about how many syringes coming into Nigeria are not good enough. They want to solve this problem by making more syringes in Nigeria instead of buying them from other countries.

Dr. Alausa said it’s really important for Nigeria to start making syringes here so Nigeria can have good quality ones and also create jobs for people.

Prof. Adeyeye agreed, saying NAFDAC won’t let any more syringes come into Nigeria from other countries.

Instead, they want to help Nigerian syringe factories do better and make sure their syringes are top-notch.

They know that making syringes in Nigeria might cost more at first, but they believe that if Nigeria make more of them, the cost will go down over time. This is because when factories produce more, they can sell them for less money.

This plan isn’t just about having good syringes; it’s also about making Nigeria stronger by being able to take care of Nigerians healthcare needs. Plus, it’s part of a bigger effort to make Nigeria’s economy stronger.

This decision to stop importing syringes into Nigeria came after Prof. Adeyeye warned customs agents about too many syringes being brought in from other countries, even though there are already high taxes on them to protect our own syringe makers.
