EU Probes X Over Content Moderation, Deepfake Concerns

The European Union has intensified its investigation into Elon Musk’s social network, X, under the Digital Services Act (DSA), focusing on content moderation and deepfake risks.
The DSA allows fines of up to 6% of a company’s global annual turnover for confirmed breaches.
The EU’s formal request for information (RFI) targets illegal content risks, manipulative design, ad transparency shortcomings, and platform data access for researchers.
It also questioned X’s reduced content moderation team headcount and linguistic coverage within the EU.
Of particular concern is X’s approach to generative AI and its impact on electoral processes and fundamental rights.
X, regulated as a very large online platform (VLOP), faces additional scrutiny regarding its handling of systemic risks such as disinformation.
The latest RFI to X requires responses by May 17 on content moderation resources and generative AI, and by May 27 for other requested information. X has yet to comment on the matter.
EU’s investigation with X remains ongoing, with discussions focusing on X’s Community Notes feature and its effectiveness in addressing election risks.
