Today marks the first day of a large protest in Nigeria, thousands of people are marching in the streets, upset about many problems in the country.
In big cities like Lagos, Abuja, and Port Harcourt, women and youths are holding signs and chanting for change. Most of the protests have been peaceful, but there have been some clashes with the police. They are throwing tear gas on the protesters, especially in Abuja and Lagos.
The government is responding quickly. Police and security forces are everywhere, and curfews are rumored to have been set in many areas, especially Abuja.
Protesters are voicing their frustrations loudly:
“We are tired of suffering while the leaders live in luxury,” said Felix, a young protester in Abuja. Lets see if the senate will accept the 70,000 minimum wage “We want real change, not just words.” There should be a way forward
“Every day, life gets harder for ordinary Nigerians,” said Amina, a mother of three in Abuja. “We can’t keep living like this. The government needs to listen to us.” We are doing this for the sake of our children; we can’t keep living like this
“We’ve heard promises before, but nothing changes,” said Chukwuemeka, a student in Nursing school. “This time, we need to see real action.” My parents can no longer pay my school fees comfortably; I am not sure what the future is for me in Nigeria!
The next few days will be clearer as long as the protests continue, we will see the government’s stance and how they will respond to the protest.
