Drugmakers in Nigeria predict a 58% increase in revenue as prices surge

—

In the face of skyrocketing drug prices, the total income of three listed pharmaceutical businesses in Nigeria increased by 58% in less than a year.

According to the most recent financial records of May & Baker Nigeria Plc, Fidson Healthcare Plc, and MeCure Industries Plc, the combined sales of these companies increased from N21.13 billion to N33.4 billion during the first quarter of 2024.

Additional investigation reveals that the revenue growth rates for Fidson, May & Baker, and MeCure were 65.6 percent, 51.4 percent, and 47.2 percent, respectively.

With a revenue of N18.88 billion in Q1, Fidson was the company with the highest value, followed by MeCure (N8.08 billion) and May & Baker (N6.42 billion).

Analysis of Individual Businesses

May & Baker Nigeria

Revenue increased to N6.42 billion in the first quarter of 2024 from N4.24 billion in the same period in 2023, according to May & Baker Nigeria. Pharmaceutical sales, which totaled N6.39 billion, and beverage sales, which came to N34.8 million, provided this revenue.

The company’s after-tax profit increased to N655.4 million from N284.4 million as a result of an increase in input costs to N4.09 billion from N3.1 billion. In Nigeria, a variety of medications, vaccines, meals, medical diagnostics, and consumer healthcare goods are produced and sold by May & Baker Nigeria. Anti-diabetics, anti-infectives, anti-malaria, analgesics, cough and cold remedies, multivitamins, and anxiolytics are among their pharmaceutical product offerings.

Fidson Healthcare

Revenue for Fidson Healthcare increased significantly, leaping from N11.4 billion in the same period in 2023 to N18.88 billion in the first quarter of 2024. Sales of over-the-counter (OTC) products brought in N6.3 billion, consumer healthcare products N364.9 million, and ethical products N12.2 billion drove this growth.

However, the company’s input costs increased as well, going from N6.5 billion to N11.2 billion. As a result, profit after taxes dropped from N1.36 billion to N1.04 billion. In Nigeria, Fidson Healthcare Limited is well-known for producing and distributing consumer, ethical, and over-the-counter pharmaceutical and nutraceutical goods.

Anti-diabetic, anti-malaria, anti-diarrhea, anti-psychotic, osteo-care, pain treatment, cold and flu, thrombo-prophylactics, and cardiovascular medications are only a few of the drug types that the company manufactures.

MeCure Industries

MeCure Industries’ revenue increased to N8.08 billion in the first quarter of 2024 from N5.49 billion in the same period the previous year. The company’s revenue is entirely derived from the sale of completed goods inside the borders of Nigeria. Despite an increase in input expenses to N5.41 billion from N3.6 billion, the company’s profit increased to N641.5 million from N398.8 million.

MeCure Industries, which was established in Nigeria in 2005 and re-registered as a public limited company in 2022, is a leader in the production and distribution of pharmaceuticals. Its facilities at the Debo Industrial Compound, where it is based in Lagos, demonstrate its dedication to innovative healthcare.

In summary, Fidson Healthcare, MeCure Industries, and May & Baker Nigeria have all shown significant revenue growth in the first quarter of 2024, driven by robust sales in their respective product categories. Despite rising input costs, these firms have managed to maintain and, in some cases, increase their profitability, underscoring their resilience and strong market presence in Nigeria’s pharmaceutical sector.
