In a significant move aimed at improving the healthcare infrastructure in Borno State, Governor Babagana Umara Zulum has allocated over N209.8 million to 170 primary healthcare centres (PHCs) across the 27 local government areas (LGAs) of the state.Â
The funds were disbursed during a ceremony held on Monday at the multi-purpose hall of the Government House in Maiduguri, where the governor symbolically presented cheques to representatives from selected health facilities in each of the state’s three senatorial zones.
Governor Zulum, in his address, emphasized the importance of this financial injection in ensuring that quality healthcare services reach the people of Borno.
He urged all facility managers and coordinators at the primary healthcare centres to remain dedicated to their roles, ensuring that the allocated funds are used effectively to enhance service delivery.
“Healthcare is a shared responsibility,” Zulum stated.
“As we continue to invest in our healthcare infrastructure, I call upon our health workers, community leaders, and all stakeholders to work together to maximize the impact of these funds. Our collective efforts will determine the quality of services provided to the people of Borno.”
As part of his commitment to improving the state’s healthcare system, Governor Zulum also announced a comprehensive plan to rehabilitate all the primary healthcare centres across Borno’s 27 local government areas.
This rehabilitation effort is intended to further bolster the capacity of these centres to meet the healthcare needs of the communities they serve.
During the event, the State Commissioner for Health and Human Services, Professor Baba M. Gana, highlighted the significance of the disbursement.
He noted that the funds, amounting to N209,819,306, were approved as part of the state’s effort to strengthen its healthcare system through the Basic Healthcare Provision Fund (BHCPF) gateways namely, the Borno State Primary Healthcare Development Board (BOSPHCDB) and the Borno State Contributory Health Management Agency (BOSCHMA).
“This occasion marks an important milestone in our collective efforts to ensure that every person in our state has access to quality healthcare services,” said Professor Gana. “The resources allocated will greatly enhance our primary and secondary healthcare facilities, enabling us to provide essential services that meet the needs of our communities.”
In addition to the financial disbursement, Governor Zulum directed the 27 local government chairpersons to take full responsibility for the primary healthcare centres in their respective domains.
He stressed the need for these local leaders to ensure that the centres operate at optimal levels and provide the best possible care to residents.
“From now on, all local government chairpersons are to take charge of the primary healthcare facilities in their domains,” Governor Zulum instructed. “Where gaps exist, I assure you that we will work together to fill them, ensuring that our people receive the best possible care.”
