Borno has highest maternal and neonatal mortality rates in Nigeria – Commissioner

—

The State Commissioner of Health and Human Services, Professor Baba Malam Gana, shared on Thursday that the United Nations Children Fund (UNICEF) gave essential medical items and kits worth $300,000 to Borno State Government.

He said that Borno has many pregnant women, around 400,000, and about 1.5 million women who could have babies. There are also around 1.2 million children under five years old.

Professor Gana thanked UNICEF for its continuous help and Governor Babagana Unara Zulum’s appreciation for UNICEF’s support during the insurgency and until now.

He mentioned that UNICEF has been generous, especially during the difficult times of the insurgency.

Sadly, many healthcare facilities were damaged or destroyed, and many healthcare workers were affected, some even kidnapped or killed.

However, UNICEF’s assistance brought relief to the people of Borno. Professor Gana noted that Nigeria faces challenges in maternal and child health, with high rates of maternal and child mortality.

UNICEF aims to change this by ensuring every child is cared for and every pregnant woman has a safe delivery.

Governor Zulum has made maternal healthcare free in Borno State, and UNICEF’s donation of medical equipment will help improve healthcare facilities.

Professor Gana expressed gratitude for the $300,000 worth of equipment, which will not only furnish primary healthcare centers but also some secondary care facilities.

He assured UNICEF of Governor Zulum’s transparency and dedication to judiciously using funds and equipment.

“I can assure the Chief of Field Office , Maiduguri, Borno State that our Executive Governor, Professor Babagana Umara Zulum is somebody who is transparent, who is workaholic and is known for his judicious use of funds and equipments which has earned him across the country a lot of awards and you have seen for yourself,

Governor Zulum’s commitment to healthcare is evident in the construction of numerous healthcare facilities, including nursing schools.
