When many churches, Christians, and even some Christian men and women hear the word “feminism,” it often triggers irritation and anger.
To them, it sounds anti-men, anti-Bible, anti-structure, anti-marriage, and even hateful.
But that is not what true feminism represents.
I always tell people: before you condemn any ideology, take time to understand it.
Before you judge those who promote it or dismiss it entirely, examine it carefully and weigh it fairly.
There are people who believe in feminism in its true sense, fairness, dignity, and equal opportunities for both sexes.
There are others who misuse it based on their personal pain, trauma, or negative experiences. These are two very different things.
As I often say, with every ideology—whether religious, social, or political—there will always be people who misinterpret it or take it out of context.
Islam is a religion of peace, yet some extremists commit violence in its name.
Christianity is a religion of love, yet some Christians use the Bible to justify wrongdoing.
Democracy is meant to be government of the people, by the people, and for the people, yet some politicians exploit it for selfish gain.
The same misunderstanding applies to patriarchy.
In its original and positive sense, patriarchy was meant to promote responsibility, leadership, protection, and provision. It emphasized men’s duty to care for their families and communities.
Over time, however, some men miscommunicated and misused it, turning it into a tool for dominance and oppression. That distortion was never its true intention.
We see a similar pattern with the biblical teaching on wives’ submission.
Over the years, this topic has generated more controversy and resentment toward Christianity than love.
Many have used it to justify control, abuse, and inequality. But biblical submission is not about inferiority, silence, or oppression. It is about mutual respect, love, sacrifice, and partnership just as the Bible commands.
Unfortunately, cultural indoctrination and personal biases have been mixed with scripture, changing its meaning and damaging its message.
This happens with many ideologies and belief systems:
Good principles are created.
Some people misinterpret them.
Others exploit them.
And the original purpose gets lost.
Before we condemn any concept—whether feminism, patriarchy, or biblical teachings—we must ask:
Are we judging the principle, or the way it has been misused?
Understanding must come before criticism.
Wisdom must come before judgment.
Judge the principle by its true purpose, not by its extremists.
