Delta Raises Alarm Over Worsening Vandalism of Power Assets

—

The Delta State Government has expressed concern over what it described as the persistent destruction of electricity infrastructure across the state, warning that the trend is becoming a serious setback to development efforts.

The Commissioner for Power and Energy, Mr Michael Anoka, made the observation on Thursday when he received leaders of the Utagba-Ogbe Community in Ndokwa West Local Government Area, who paid him a courtesy visit in Asaba.

Anoka stressed the importance of communities hosting government electrification projects taking ownership of the facilities and ensuring their protection against sabotage and theft.

He noted that critical components such as cables, transformers, solar batteries, and other power equipment are frequently targeted by vandals, leading to repeated losses.

According to him, the state government has committed substantial resources to the provision and maintenance of electricity infrastructure aimed at improving living standards.

He explained that each electrification project undergoes detailed planning and technical assessments before execution, making the destruction of such facilities even more costly and frustrating.

The commissioner further lamented that vandalism not only drains government resources but also slows down the pace of ongoing and planned electricity projects.

He issued a stern warning to individuals involved in the destruction of public utilities, urging them to desist immediately or face the full weight of the law.

Anoka also called on traditional rulers, community leaders, and residents to strengthen collaboration with government and security agencies in safeguarding public infrastructure.

Reaffirming the commitment of Governor Sheriff Oborevwori’s administration, he said the government remains determined to expand power access and strengthen infrastructure across Delta State.

He emphasized that protecting electricity installations is a collective duty that requires active participation from all stakeholders.

In his response, the leader of the delegation, Mr Godwin Edeme, assured the commissioner that the Utagba-Ogbe community would take responsibility for the protection of electricity installations within its area.

Edeme pledged the community’s continued support for government efforts and promised cooperation in curbing vandalism and promoting development initiatives.
