Nigeria Premier Football League side Rivers United were involved in a road accident on Thursday while travelling to Awka, Anambra State, for their President Federation Cup Round of 16 clash against Nasarawa United.
The accident occurred along the Obiri-Ikwerre Airport Road on the outskirts of Port Harcourt shortly after the team departed for the fixture.
In a statement obtained by The News Chronicle, the club confirmed that some players and officials sustained minor injuries, but no fatalities or life-threatening injuries were recorded. The affected individuals are receiving medical attention and are reported to be in stable condition.
Rivers United thanked supporters and the football community for their concern and prayers, adding that further updates on the team’s travel plans and the Federation Cup fixture will be communicated in due course.
