Anambra Bans Displaying Caskets in Public, Sets 60-Day Limit for Burials

—

The Anambra State Government has recently enacted a ban on the public display of caskets and introduced stringent regulations governing burial and funeral activities within the state.

This legislative move, sanctioned by the state House of Assembly on February 1, aims to bring about better control and standardization in the handling of caskets and corpses.

The law stipulates that mortuary attendants must report any corpse that exceeds one month from its deposition to the Ministry of Health. Violations of these regulations may result in fines of N100,000, imprisonment for six months, or a combination of both.

Furthermore, the legislation mandates that all burial and funeral ceremonies for indigenous deceased individuals in the state must be registered with the town union of the deceased, and permission from the relevant Local Government Authority is required for such ceremonies to take place.

This comprehensive approach seeks to address various issues related to sanitation, accountability, and community involvement in burial practices across Anambra.
