Fresh internal distrust has reportedly gripped the leadership of the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) in the Lake Chad Basin following the arrest and detention of four senior members of the group’s Shura Council by its leader, Ba Shuwa.
The arrests were reportedly carried out after ISWAP’s internal intelligence unit, the Amniyya, concluded an extended surveillance operation, accusing the four senior figures of repeatedly listening to what the group described as “subversive” audio messages believed to have originated from Nigerian military psychological operations.
Those detained include Mallam Burin, a respected field commander (Qaid); Babakura Wanjam, a senior cleric responsible for ideological guidance; Abu Huraira, a prominent Shura Council member; and Mallam Ari Kara, another senior member of the council.
The arrests have reportedly sparked anxiety and uncertainty within the terrorist group’s ranks, as the detained figures are among ISWAP’s top decision-makers, responsible for shaping its military, ideological, and administrative strategies. Observers say the move exposes growing mistrust and internal divisions within the insurgent organisation.
According to reports obtained by The News Chronicle on Sunday, the Amniyya monitored the four officials for an extended period before recommending their arrest. The operation is seen as one of the clearest signs of increasing paranoia within ISWAP’s leadership amid fears of infiltration and external influence.
Security analysts believe the development could weaken the group’s cohesion by lowering morale, disrupting command structures, encouraging defections, and deepening existing fractures within its leadership.
The reported crisis comes as ISWAP continues to face sustained military pressure from Nigerian and regional security forces across the North-East. Security agencies are said to be closely monitoring the situation, viewing the internal conflict as an opportunity to further degrade the group’s operational capabilities through intelligence exploitation and psychological operations.
The latest development also follows the reported surrender of two senior ISWAP commanders in June 2026, who allegedly cited dissatisfaction with the group’s leadership and worsening internal conditions.
While security experts say the leadership crisis could accelerate ISWAP’s decline, they caution that the group remains a significant security threat and may become more unpredictable as its leaders attempt to tighten control.
The insurgency in the Lake Chad Basin has displaced millions of people and caused years of humanitarian and economic hardship across the region.
Analysts say the reported internal divisions offer renewed hope that continued military pressure and internal fractures could further weaken the terrorist organisation.
