Renewable energy key to improved power supply, cleaner environment

Residents of Lagos have called for increased adoption of renewable energy technologies, particularly solar power, as a practical solution to environmental challenges and inadequate electricity supply.

The residents, who spoke with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in separate interviews on Tuesday, said greater use of solar energy would help reduce pollution, improve public health and support efforts to address climate change.

Mrs Bertha Aina, a school administrator in Ikeja, said solar energy could reduce dependence on fuel-powered generators, which contribute to air pollution.

“When generators run for hours, they release smoke into the environment. Solar panels produce electricity without emitting harmful fumes, making the air cleaner for everyone,” she said.

Aina noted that cleaner air was particularly important for children, the elderly and residents of densely populated communities.

Mr Chukwudi Nwafor, a small business owner in Ojota, said solar power could also help reduce noise pollution associated with generators.

“In many neighborhoods, generators run almost all day. Solar systems are quiet. Reducing generator use means less noise and a healthier environment for residents,” he said.

According to him, quieter surroundings can improve concentration, communication and overall quality of life.

An airport worker, Ms Kafayat Adeyemi, said that increased use of solar energy would reduce pressure on conventional energy sources, which are linked to environmental degradation and greenhouse gas emissions.

“The more people use solar power, the less demand there is for energy sources that contribute to environmental degradation and greenhouse gas emissions,” she said.

Adeyemi said widespread adoption of solar technology could support climate change mitigation efforts and promote sustainable development.

She also noted that solar energy users often become more conscious of their electricity consumption, helping to reduce energy waste.

Mrs Claire Adedokun, a resident of Ikeja, said solar energy could contribute to cleaner neighborhoods by reducing reliance on generators.

“Many homes rely on generators daily. The exhaust leaves black soot on walls, roofs, curtains and household items. Solar power helps reduce that problem because it produces electricity without smoke,” she said.

Adedokun added that reducing generator use would improve outdoor air quality, especially in densely populated communities.

Mr Bethrand Ikpi, an electrician in Ogba, said solar technology offered environmental and social benefits beyond household electricity supply.

According to him, solar-powered streetlights can improve community security while reducing dependence on fossil fuels.

“Solar-powered streetlights can improve security in communities without increasing fuel consumption. They provide lighting at night while relying on renewable energy from the sun,” he said.

Ikpi added that increased use of solar energy could reduce emissions associated with the transportation and distribution of petroleum products.

He also said solar systems equipped with battery storage could help households maintain electricity supply during extreme weather conditions that often disrupt conventional power sources.

The residents called for increased public awareness, supportive government policies, and improved access to renewable energy technologies to encourage wider adoption.

They expressed optimism that greater investment in solar energy would support climate action while helping communities meet their growing electricity needs sustainably.
