Former Senate Leader, Ali Ndume, has raised concerns that Nigerian troops are struggling against heavily armed terrorists following recent attacks in parts of Borno State. He called on the Federal Government to urgently provide sophisticated weapons and sufficient ammunition to strengthen the fight against insurgency.
Ndume spoke in Abuja after visiting devastated communities in Ngoshe and Pulka alongside Borno State Governor Babagana Zulum. He warned that Nigeria could risk losing parts of the North-East if the military is not adequately equipped.
According to him, troops were initially overwhelmed during coordinated assaults linked to Boko Haram and Islamic State West Africa Province fighters. He claimed soldiers temporarily withdrew due to insufficient ammunition before reinforcements helped them regain control.
Ndume described the destruction in the affected communities as total, noting that homes and infrastructure were wiped out. He urged federal authorities to support rebuilding efforts, while commending Governor Zulum for visiting displaced residents and spending a night in Pulka to boost morale.
Meanwhile, the Defence Headquarters dismissed fears that terrorists could overrun the region, insisting there was no basis for such claims.
The warning comes after recent suicide bombings in Maiduguri that reportedly killed at least 23 people and injured over 100, highlighting renewed security concerns in Nigeria’s North-East.
