El-Rufai Remanded in Custody as Court Fixes March 31 for Bail Hearing

Former Kaduna State governor, Nasir El-Rufai, has been remanded in custody after appearing before the Federal High Court in Kaduna over alleged corruption-related offences.

El-Rufai was arraigned by the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) on a multi-count charge bordering on alleged money laundering, conversion of public property, and abuse of office.
The case was heard by Justice Rilwan Aikawa, who adjourned proceedings to March 31 to consider pending applications, including a bail request.
Counsel to the former governor, Ubong Akpan, told journalists that no bail application was filed during the session, explaining that the matter was fixed specifically for arraignment.
He added that the defence had raised concerns about proceeding due to a pending issue involving the presiding judge, but the court continued with the process.
The anti-graft agency also disclosed a separate case before a Kaduna State High Court involving additional allegations of fraud, abuse of office, and the conferral of undue advantage.
The commission stated that the charges were filed earlier in March and that the defendant had been duly served.
Meanwhile, supporters of the former governor gathered at the court premises in solidarity. His son, Bello El-Rufai, addressed journalists, saying he attended to support his father and expressed confidence in the judicial process. He described the former governor as a transformative leader and urged adherence to the rule of law.
Another group of supporters reportedly assembled at Murtala Muhammed Square, chanting praises and marching toward the court venue early in the morning.
