Real Madrid have verified that head coach Xabi Alonso will leave the Santiago Bernabeu by mutual consent and that former club defender Alvaro Arbeloa has been appointed his immediate successor.
The decision was revealed on Monday, less than twenty-four hours after Los Blancos lost to Barcelona 3–2 in the final of the Spanish Super Cup. Having succeeded Carlo Ancelotti at the season’s start, Alonso leaves his post only eight months after assuming it.
The club affirmed Arbeloa’s advancement from the reserve team, Castilla, which he has been head coach of since June 2025, in another statement. Wednesday’s Copa del Rey round of 16 against Albacete will mark his first mission.
Madrid’s inconsistent form under Alonso hastened interior talks already in progress for weeks following the Super Cup loss. Pressure reappeared following recent high-profile losses despite a quick comeback, including five straight victories late last year.
Four points behind Barcelona, Madrid now ranks second in La Liga, but they have battled for rhythm despite excellent individual performances like Kylian Mbappe’s prolific goal run. Earlier in the season, heavy defeats to Paris Saint-Germain and Atletico Madrid also caused alarm among the club hierarchy.
Having signed a three-year contract after leaving Bayer Leverkusen, Alonso had intended to bring in a more contemporary tactical approach; yet, form dips, injuries, and rumored dressing room conflict restricted his influence.
Having once played for Real Madrid and Spain, Arbeloa now takes over as the team tries to level its season and direct its national and European aspirations.
