Nigerian singer Chike has continued to face criticism online after appearing at a movie premiere in Lagos amid allegations of his affair with TV Host Frank Edoho’s ex-wife.
Videos from the event, which circulated on X on Monday, May 18, showed Chike taking photographs with fans, signing autographs, and interacting with women who sang along to his songs at the cinema.
The reactions quickly divided social media users.
Delta State governor’s aide Ossai Ovie Success criticized the atmosphere surrounding the singer’s appearance. In a post shared online, he wrote, “Instead of disgust or shame, ladies were going crazy, fighting to take pictures with him like he’s some kind of hero.”
He added, “This is not ‘he’s fine.’ This is not ‘mind your business.’ This is women openly hyping and rewarding a man for sleeping with another woman’s husband.”
On Sunday, social media commentator VeryDarkMan weighed in on the controversy in a viral video. According to him, the allegations could affect Chike’s wedding bookings, which he described as a major part of the singer’s career.
“Most of Chiké’s bookings are wedding bookings,” he said. “But you see this matter so, e go mess am so, cause those bookings go stop.”
VeryDarkMan claimed some married men may become uncomfortable inviting the singer to perform at weddings because of the allegations. He also alleged that Chike charges between ₦50 million and ₦70 million per wedding performance.
Some users on X reiterated similar concerns. One user wrote, “I wonder if my husband would still let Chike play at our wedding.” Another said, “Chike will always be remembered as the man who slept with Frank Edoho’s wife.”
Others defended the singer and dismissed the criticism. An X user identified as De Liberty argued that public reaction to cheating scandals involving men and women is often different. “Society often reacts differently to cheating scandals involving men and women,” the user wrote after videos from the premiere surfaced online.
The controversy followed allegations exchanged during the ongoing marital dispute between Frank Edoho and his estranged wife, Sandra Edoho. Edoho had alleged that his wife was involved with a popular singer, though he did not publicly name Chike.
Amid the backlash, Chike posted a short message on X on Sunday that read: “Pity My Soul!”
