Why X Paid One Creator $4,300 and Another $0 Despite Millions of Impressions

Users on X (formerly Twitter) have been debating on how the platform’s creator monetisation system operates, following the circulation of analytics screenshots showing widely different earning outcomes under similar engagement conditions.

The discussion started after a user shared analytics data showing high impressions and engagement metrics but reported receiving $0.00 from X’s creator payout programme.

The post drew responses from other users attempting to interpret the factors behind eligibility and payment outcomes.

One user, Joel (@MLSokoro), argued that impressions alone are insufficient for monetisation. He stated:

“Either you got your impressions from being a reply guy or you plug your tweets somewhere to get impressions without caring if people engage or not. That’s why your engagement rate is low, hence below minimum payouts.”

He further explained that payouts depend on a combination of performance indicators:

“Impressions + engagement + engagement rate all have to be good and must come from verified users for you to be paid.”

Another participant in the discussion, said she remained unclear about how X determines creator rewards.

Meanwhile, another creator, shared a screenshot showing a payout of $4,300, despite having lower-quality engagement indicators compared to other accounts with higher impressions but no earnings.

Joel also suggested that artificially inflated engagement may affect eligibility, noting that some accounts appear to generate impressions through coordinated repost activity or engagement groups rather than organic interaction.

Several users reported generating millions of impressions without meeting payout requirements, while others expressed difficulty interpreting the platform’s requirements even after subscribing to X Premium.

One user noted that despite recording approximately 1.2 million impressions over two months, monetisation outcomes remained limited.

Some users described the system as inconsistent, while others suggested that sustained activity and strategic engagement remain necessary for eligibility.

Joel summarised the observed pattern as follows:

“At every X payday, a new set of people quit the chase for Elon funds due to consistent below minimum payouts, while new people who see other people’s payout for the first time are encouraged to subscribe for blue tick and try their luck.”

So how does X monetisation generally operates?

X creator payouts are not determined by impressions alone. To qualify, creators typically need to be subscribed to X Premium, have a minimum follower count (usually 500+), meet a monthly impressions threshold (often 5 million+), and be in an eligible country.

Main Revenue Streams Come From:

1. Ads Revenue Sharing: X shares a portion of ad revenue generated from ads displayed in a creator’s replies. Earnings are based on impressions from Premium subscribers viewing those ads (not total views).

2. Creator Subscriptions: Creators can offer paid monthly subscriptions to their followers, giving subscribers access to exclusive content, subscriber-only replies, or other perks. X takes a percentage of the subscription fee.

3. Tips/Super Follows: Followers can send one-time tips directly to creators via integrated payment options (Stripe, Bitcoin, etc.). This is a direct peer-to-peer transfer with minimal platform cut.

4. X Premium Revenue: A portion of X Premium subscription fees is redistributed to creators based on engagement metrics from Premium users interacting with their content.

5. Affiliate & Sponsored Content: Creators can independently negotiate brand deals and sponsored posts outside X’s native tools, but publish them on the platform.

How Payouts Work

Earnings accumulate in a creator’s account and are paid out once a minimum threshold is reached (typically $10–$50). Payments are usually processed through Stripe. X takes a platform fee (generally 20–30%) from subscription-based revenue.

People’s earnings on X will depend on their content quality, follower count, engagement, and how many of their followers are X Premium subscribers, with higher-paying niches like finance and tech giving an added edge.

Ad rates also vary by region, meaning location plays a role in overall income. That said, earnings tend to be unpredictable, heavily favoring large accounts with Premium audiences, and program terms can shift without much notice. Creators in certain countries, including Nigeria, may also run into payout limitations due to Stripe’s regional restrictions.
