Virgil Van Dijk match ban could extend beyond a game after FA investigation

Liverpool’s captain Van Dijk could be hit with more match ban by the English F.A. Virgil was sent off during Liverpool’s game against Newcastle United, he was charged with an improper behaviour following his sending off at Newcastle, and could now have his suspension extended.

According to Neil Jones, Liverpool could be without captain Virgil van Dijk for more than just their next fixture after the Dutch centre back was slammed with an FA improper conduct charge.

Van Dijk is accused of behaving in an improper manner and using abusive or insulting words toward a match official following his sending off against Newcastle United on Sunday.

The 32-year-old was shown a straight red card by referee John Brooks in the 29th minute of Sunday’s game, having been adjudged to have brought down Alexander Isak, denying the Magpies striker a goalscoring opportunity in the process.

Today, the English FA released a statement confirming that Van Dijk has been charged with a breach of rule E3.1, which says that “A Participant shall at all times act in the best interests of the game and shall not act in any manner which is improper or brings the game into disrepute or use anyone, or a combination of, violent conduct, serious foul play, threatening, abusive, indecent or insulting words or behaviour.”
