Gusau, Sanusi Step Down as Ikpeme Becomes NFF Interim General Secretary

The crisis rocking the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has deepened following the appointment of Dr Emmanuel Ikpeme as interim General Secretary to oversee the federation’s secretariat.

Ikpeme’s appointment comes amid the resignation of key NFF officials, including President Alhaji Ibrahim Musa Gusau and General Secretary Dr Mohammed Sanusi.

The shake-up also affected the NFF’s top administrative structure, with Dr Ademola Olajire, former Director of Media and Communications, appointed interim Deputy General Secretary.

The National Sports Commission (NSC) has meanwhile suspended all processes relating to the NFF Elective Congress earlier scheduled for September 27.

According to the commission, it will unveil a new electoral timetable after developing comprehensive reforms in consultation with the Fédération Internationale de Football Association (FIFA) and the Confederation of African Football (CAF).

In another move aimed at ensuring continuity across the domestic game, administrators overseeing the country’s major leagues—including the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL), Nigeria National League (NNL), Nigeria Women’s Football League (NWFL) and Nationwide League One (NLO)—have been directed to hand over the management of their respective competitions to their Chief Operating Officers.

The latest measures are part of efforts to keep football operations running while the federation undergoes the transition and proposed reforms.
