The Governing Council of the University of Abuja, recently renamed Yakubu Gowon University, has approved the promotion of 34 academic staff to professorial positions.
The approval was announced in a statement issued on Sunday in Abuja by the Acting Director of Information and University Relations, Habib Yakoob.
According to Yakoob, 17 senior lecturers were promoted to the rank of Professor, while another 17 were elevated to the position of Associate Professor across various disciplines and areas of specialisation.
He explained that the promotions were ratified during the Governing Council’s regular meeting held on July 10 and 11 after the council considered favourable external assessment reports on the candidates’ scholarly publications.
The newly promoted academics are drawn from several fields, including community medicine, veterinary medicine, engineering, religious studies, guidance and counselling, accounting, library and information science, business administration, physics, parasitology and entomology, physiology, crop science, educational foundations, and banking and finance.
Yakoob noted that the promotions take effect from October 2025.
Congratulating the beneficiaries, the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Hakeem Fawehinmi, described the promotions as recognition of the academics’ commitment to scholarship, research, and academic excellence.
He reaffirmed the university’s commitment to strengthening its internal processes to ensure the timely consideration of external assessment reports and the promotion of qualified academic staff in line with established guidelines.
“These promotions are not just about attaining a higher rank. They reflect our belief that hard work and dedication should be recognised and rewarded.
“I congratulate all those promoted and encourage them to see this as a call to even greater service to the university, their profession and society,” Fawehinmi said.
